Description

Intended for university professors teaching in English, this interactive program explores curriculum organization, principles and methods of instruction applied to teaching English language learners in the subject areas. Participants in this program will have an opportunity to study and examine: social, cultural and political, as well as theoretical considerations about additional language learning; comparison of native language and additional language; analysis of the structure of English; issues and problems inherent in the acquisition of an additional language; and introduction to specific instructional strategies for accommodating English Language Learners in the subject-area classroom.

The program—delivered using strategies that are current, relevant, meaningful and practical—will provide participants with learning experiences about program instruction, assessment, and evaluation associated with Canadian Ministry of Education documents and other materials. Important to the program will be opportunities for participants to work individually and in groups in a supportive atmosphere. They will receive feedback from peers and the program instructor, and share the products of their learning with others.

Opportunities for professional reading, reflection, communication, and expression are also integral parts of the course. The instructor will model instructional strategies, and provide examples of formative and summative assessments that can be replicated in participants' classrooms. The instructor will use technology to support candidates' learning as online interactive communications, connections to quality resources, and links to other sites.
