English as a Second Language

English as a Second Language courses can help you meet your educational, professional and personal goals through a wide variety of options. From beginner to university level, we have a program that will get you there.

Lakehead University's programs target all four language areas: reading, writing, listening, and speaking. You will improve your ability to read academic materials, write essays, take notes, and give presentations.

Offered at both our Thunder Bay and Orillia campuses, the Academic English Program (AEP) and Intensive Academic English Program (IAEP) is designed to prepare you for academic studies if you do not meet Lakehead University's English language requirements. Our program targets all four language areas: reading, writing, listening, and speaking. You will improve your ability to read academic materials, write essays, take notes, and give presentations.
The Innovative English Language Programs are offered throughout the year at both of our safe and supportive campuses located in the heart of Canada. Learning English at Lakehead is enriched with exciting thematic experiences that enhance your language studies - all while you enjoy Canada's most famous attractions and the great outdoors.
The Train the Trainer Program is an innovative program that offers a unique, ongoing educational experience. It is designed for English as a foreign language (EFL) teachers or university professors who teach their subject areas in English and want to learn how to accommodate their learner's language proficiency in their classroom.
