WSIB & MLITSD Research Day (Workplace Mental Health)

We are excited to share that Dr. Vicki Kristman will be speaking on the Northwestern Ontario Workplace & Worker Health Study on October 17, 2024 as a part of the Ministry of Labour, Immigration, Training and Skills Development (MLITSD) and the Workplace Safety and Insurance Board (WSIB)'s Research Day event! 

This virtual event will be showcasing two funded research projects focused on mental health in the workplace. This is an opportunity to learn about occupational health and safety research and to ask questions directly to the researchers. 

The event will take place October 17 from 12:00pm to 1:15pm and will feature the following research projects:

Dr. Victoria Arrandale, Moderator Dr. Victoria Arrandale, Moderator
Dr. Victoria Arrandale is an Assistant Professor in the Dalla Lana School of Public Health at the University of Toronto where she is the Director of the Centre for Occupational Disease Prevention. Victoria sits on the WSIB Scientific Advisory Table on Occupational Disease as well as being active in the Occupational Health and Safety System in Ontario through involvement with committees led by the Ministry of Labour, Immigration, Training and Skills Development. Dr. Arrandale’s research focuses on the measurement of workplace exposures and the assessment of exposure in occupational epidemiology. Her work has examined exposures in a variety of workplaces including mining, construction, nail salons and electronic waste workers.

Dr. Vicki Kristman
Dr. Vicki Kristman is a Professor in the Department of Health Sciences and Director and Senior Scientist of the EPID@Work Research Institute at Lakehead University. She holds a Lakehead University-Ontario Research Chair in Injury & Disability Prevention. She conducts research to better understand factors associated with health, particularly mental health, and disability in the workplace to develop and test interventions to improve workers' lives.

Dr. Desre M. Kramer

Dr. Desre Kramer
Dr. Desre M. Kramer is the research coordinator on the Stressed Out Supervisors project. She leads the qualitative research and the evaluation. She is a Sociologist with extensive experience in workplace-based research and has expertise in occupational stress, knowledge transfer & exchange and adult education. Dr. Kramer was previously the Associate Director of the Occupational Cancer Research Centre (OCRC) at Cancer Care Ontario, and before that was the Associate Director of the Centre of Research Expertise for the Prevention of Musculoskeletal Disorders (CRE-MSD) at the University of Waterloo. She is now a freelance researcher.
 

Dr. Linn

Dr. Linn Holness
Dr. Linn Holness is an occupational medicine physician and a Professor Emerita at the Dalla Lana School of Public Health and Department of Medicine at the University of Toronto. She is a staff physician in the Division of Occupational Medicine in the Department of Medicine at St. Michael’s Hospital and a scientist in the MAP Centre for Urban Health Solutions. She is the Director of the Centre for Research Expertise in Occupational Disease (CREOD). Her research interests in occupational health are broad; covering a variety of topics including occupational disease and its identification, occupational health services and occupational health and safety in the context of specific populations such as vulnerable workers. Her main research has focused on prevention, health care utilization, diagnosis, return to work and outcomes related to occupational skin disease.
 

Dr. Peter Strahlendorf

Dr. Peter Strahlendorf

Dr. Peter Strahlendorf has taken over from Dr. Thomas Tenkate as the Principal Investigator on the Stressed Out Supervisor study. He completed his doctorate in occupational law at Oxford University.
He is a well-known OHS legal expert and OHS professional, with expertise in OHS law, OHS Management Systems, and OHS risk management. He is a retired Associate Professor at the School of Occupational and Public Health, Toronto Metropolitan University (Ryerson University) having taught at the school since 1986. He has been involved in OHS training and consultancy since 1992. He has taught occupational specialists to help them obtain their CRSP and CSP designations. He is also a part-time Appeals Officer under the Canada Labour Code. Dr. Strahlendorf has long-standing experience with the legal obligations of supervisors, WHMIS, and the Internal Responsibility System.
