Health Leadership for Northern, Rural, and Remote Communities will introduce learners to the key domains of leadership development with an opportunity to apply the learning to a Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada (TRC) project. Throughout the course, leadership is viewed through the lens of skill sets that can be learned. All disciplines in healthcare from front line to executive leaders need leadership skills to provide excellent patient care, contribute to healthy workplaces, and address the many challenges in our current era. The course is intended to provide learners with a critical overview of evidence-based leadership theories and frameworks in the context of Northern Rural and Remote areas. The course will also engage learners in reflecting on their own leadership including self-awareness, teamwork, systems thinking, and leading towards identified goals strengths so they might further develop their capabilities to serve in the rural and remote context. Finally, learners will be provided with an opportunity to reflect and engage in planning to lead a change based on one of the TRC’s calls to action. Emphasis will be placed on the leadership in the Northern Rural and Remote context and viewed through the lens of learnable competencies. The course will provide learners with a taste of the multiple domains of leadership competencies.
