What do you offer? Lakehead University has multiple ways to learn: Thunder Bay, Orillia, and online. We offer a variety of lifelong learning, professional development, workplace training, and skill development opportunities. What learning options are available? Lakehead University offers an array of learning opportunities through courses, programs, workshops, lecture series, and training.
What prerequisites are needed to take a particular program or course? Many of our learning opportunities do not require prerequisites. More detailed information about courses and programs, including any prerequisites, can be found on the specific course or program information page.
Will there be an exam or formal assessment? Assessment varies by type of offering. More detailed information about courses and programs, including any assessments, can be found on the specific course or program information page.
What do registration fees cover? Unless otherwise specified, registration fees cover the cost of course enrolment.
What are Workshops / Seminars / Lectures? Workshops / Seminars / Lectures consist of general interest programming designed to provide creative and thought-provoking educational opportunities. They do not include an assessment and upon successful completion, the learner will be awarded a Lakehead University Certificate of Attendance or Certificate of Participation.
What are Courses? Courses have a coherent set of skills and knowledge specified by a statement of purpose, learning outcomes, and strong evidence of need by industry, employers, and/or the community. They are also a representation of learning focused on a discrete set of competencies (i.e., skills, knowledge, attributes) and typically require less time to complete than traditional credentials, for example, less than twelve weeks. Upon successful completion, the learner will be awarded a Lakehead University Certificate of Completion.
What are Micro-credentials? A micro-credential is defined as a flexible and granular form of post-secondary education training which delivers specific skills and competencies, and that may be developed and offered in a partnership between one or more post-secondary institutions and one or more employers, and may be tailored towards a specific need, or may be stacked together with the opportunity to track towards a larger credential. Micro-credentials are less than 12 weeks in duration and are between 5 to 300 hours. They include an assessment and upon successful completion, the learner will be awarded a Lakehead University Certificate of Completion.
What is a Course Series or Program? A non-credit course series or program may consist of stackable courses or a pre-defined set of courses. They are designed for those seeking to elevate their career or pursue new opportunities. They may be tied to a labour market need or developed in partnership with a specific employer or sector. They focus on a specific area or skill set not traditionally offered in a formal degree program. They may lead to industry-recognized credentials. A course series or program is a minimum of three courses totaling a minimum of 96 hours or subject to outside professional requirements. Upon successful completion, the learner will be awarded a Lakehead University Certificate of Completion.

What is learning through Lectures? Instruction in which learners obtain knowledge from an educational talk and are encouraged to take notes.
What is learning through Research? Instruction in which the learner conducts a systematic investigation of materials and sources in order to establish facts and reach new conclusions.
What is learning through Seminars? Seminars are discussion-based offerings that are facilitated by instructors where learners are active participants. Typically, they are held in person and on campus.
