Project Management Certificate Program

Description

The Project Management Certificate Program is a comprehensive 10-day certificate program ideal for project management professionals at all levels of their careers. It is delivered in partnership with the Northwestern Ontario Innovation Centre (NOIC), Lakehead University, and Procept Associates Ltd., a registered PMI ATP.

Whether learners are aspiring project managers looking to gain foundational knowledge or experienced professionals seeking to advance their skills, this program offers a comprehensive curriculum that covers all aspects of project management. The program is designed to help learners develop the skills and knowledge they need to succeed as a project manager, including project initiation, planning, execution, monitoring and control, and closure.

The courses below are offered to learners as individual courses and as a Certificate program. Upon successful completion of the entire certificate program, learners will receive a Certificate of Completion from Lakehead University. Professional credits for this program can be claimed under Procept Associates at the Project Management Institute. For those looking to prepare for the Project Management Professional (PMP)® exam, register for the (PMP)® Exam prep. This program aligns with industry best practices to provide learners with the knowledge and skills needed to succeed in today's project-driven world.

For the certificate program, there are 3 mandatory courses which combined equal 5 days of instruction. These are:

  • Project Management Essentials (3 days)
  • Project Communications & Stakeholder Engagement (1 day)
  • Managing Project Risk (1 day)

Choosing from the remaining courses, certificate program attendees will need to register for and complete an additional 5 days worth of instruction.

Courses will be delivered in half-day sessions. This means that a 2-day course will be completed via four half-day sessions. Dates may be subject to change. These courses will be virtual, instructor-led deliveries.

Project Management Essentials

This 3-day fundamental course offers an accessible, hands-on journey through the entire project lifecycle, from initiation to closing, with a special emphasis on initiation and planning. Participants work in project teams to practice project management tools and face realistic challenges encountered on projects. This course provides two diverse case studies, ensuring a relevant learning experience for participants from all backgrounds.

This course is designed to provide participants with an understanding of the complexity of managing stakeholders and project communications. We will cover the processes, tools and techniques of Project Communications Management and Project Stakeholder Management as presented in the Project Management Institute’s (PMI®) A Guide to the Project Management Body of Knowledge®.

Defining and Managing Project Requirements

This one-day program focuses on the requirements management process. Using an exercise taken from a real-life project, participants will learn how to define the problem, assess its business impact, and identify and manage stakeholders’ expectations. Participants will use elicitation tools and techniques to discover the underlying requirements that contribute to solutions that produce desired outcomes.

This course looks at risk identification, qualitative and quantitative techniques to identify the likelihood of a risk occurring and the impact if it does. A variety of risk response strategies are discussed and practiced during workshop exercises. Upon course completion, participants will be more confident in their ability to manage uncertainty.

Project Scheduling Essentials

Are your projects consistently late? Are you struggling to set realistic expectations of when you will be able to turn over deliverables to your stakeholders? If so, then this course is for you. Starting with how to choose the right high-level scheduling approach (waterfall, incremental or agile) for your project and then continuing to detailed scheduling techniques such as the critical path method (CPM), this course will give you the tools you need to build more realistic project schedules. Case study simulations will give participants hands-on practice building project schedules for real-world projects.

Project Cost Management

This course provides participants with an understanding of project cost estimating, budget development, and budget management. It is not intended to provide participants with the detailed methods of financial accounting. You will discuss project estimating methods, assigning, and managing contingency, creating a time-phased project budget and practice earned value. The tools used in this workshop will provide you with stronger techniques to monitor and report on your project performance.

Strategies Effectively Leading Change/Leading Project Driven Change

Through a combination of lectures and individual and group activities based on real-world case studies, this course introduces project managers to the fundamentals of change management practice, helping them to understand the risks introduced by change resistance and how to reduce or eliminate those risks. By incorporating the techniques revealed in this course into their toolkits, project managers will be better able to deal with stakeholders, reduce project delays, increase efficiencies, and reduce the risk of not meeting a project’s business case objectives.

This 1-day workshop introduces project managers to the best practices for getting final signoffs and closing out projects. Project managers will come away with a structured closeout framework and some templates that can be used to complete an orderly project closeout.
