Project Management Certificate

Description

The Project Management Certificate Program is a comprehensive 10 short course online certificate program ideal for project management professionals at all levels of their careers. Whether learners are aspiring project managers looking to gain foundational knowledge or experienced professionals seeking to advance their skills, this program offers a comprehensive curriculum that covers all aspects of project management. 

Intended to be completed over a year, the program is designed to help learners develop the skills and knowledge they need to succeed as a project manager, including project initiation, planning, execution, monitoring and control, and closure. It is delivered in partnership with Procept Associates Ltd, a Registered Education Provider accredited by the Project Management Association of Canada (PMAC) as meeting their standards for quality. After completing this course, participants are eligible to write the Certified Project Coordinator (CPC) exam from PMAC.

Participants must first take Project Management Essentials, followed by five mandatory courses, and two of four elective courses (a complete list can be found below). The mandatory and elective courses can be taken in any order. 

Upon successful completion of the entire certificate program, learners will receive a Certificate of Completion from Lakehead University. Professional credits for this program can be claimed under Procept Associates at the Project Management Institute.

Project Management Essentials

This 3-day fundamental course offers an accessible, hands-on journey through the entire project lifecycle, from initiation to closing, with a special emphasis on initiation and planning. Participants work in project teams to practice project management tools and face realistic challenges encountered on projects. This course provides two diverse case studies, ensuring a relevant learning experience for participants from all backgrounds.

This course is designed to provide participants with an understanding of the complexity of managing stakeholders and project communications. We will cover the processes, tools and techniques of Project Communications Management and Project Stakeholder Management as presented in the Project Management Institute’s (PMI®) A Guide to the Project Management Body of Knowledge® Participants will learn through application to a case study and hands-on exercises.

Project Schedule & Cost Management
One of the primary responsibilities of a project manager is to manage a project’s budget and schedule. Success is often measured based on meeting deadlines and delivering the project within financial and schedule constraints. This course will review roles and responsibilities, estimating, how to be a good steward of project resources and how to adapt project scheduling and budgeting efforts to uncertainty with concepts such as rolling-wave planning and agile delivery.

Managing Project Risk
This course looks at risk identification, qualitative and quantitative techniques to identify the likelihood of a risk occurring and the impact if it does. A variety of risk response strategies are discussed and practiced during workshop exercises. Upon course completion, participants will be more confident in their ability to manage uncertainty.

Through a combination of lectures and individual and group activities based on real-world case studies, this course introduces project managers to the fundamentals of change management practice, helping them to understand the risks introduced by change resistance and how to reduce or eliminate those risks.

Introduction to Agile Project Management
This course aims to introduce stakeholders and project team members to the agile way of working using the common Scrum framework. Unlike typical Scrum-based training, however, the course expands the framework to include an overview of agile requirements management techniques and agile estimating and planning techniques that are used to set reasonable stakeholder expectations at the start of an agile project.

Defining & Managing Project Requirements
This course focuses on the requirements management process. Using an exercise taken from a real-life project, participants will learn how to define the problem, assess its business impact, and identify and manage stakeholders’ expectations. Participants will use elicitation tools and techniques to discover the underlying requirements that contribute to solutions that produce desired outcomes.

Procurement management, and especially contract administration, has become an essential project management skill in today’s trend of outsourcing. Prior Learning Assessment & Recognition (PLAR) is a mechanism for non-credit offerings to provide a reduction of module requirements for significant and relevant learning acquired through work, volunteering and other life experiences that are not recognized through formal mechanisms.

The PLAR process uses a variety of tools to help learners reflect on, identify, articulate, and demonstrate past experience, and compare this learning to modules within a micro-credential course. These tools may include descriptions and proof of prior learning, a portfolio, a resumé, etc. 

Learners may withdraw up to one week before the course start date with no penalty. Withdrawals made less than one week before the start date are eligible for a 50% refund, and learners may transfer to another PM Program course offering at no additional fee within two years. Once a course has begun, no refunds are available.
